John Brooks Slaughter has been appointed as a USC University Professor.

An already distinguished career has become even more distinguished.

John Brooks Slaughter, Dean’s Professor of Education and Engineering at USC Rossier, has been appointed a University Professor, the university announced April 5.

Slaughter was one of three professors to receive the title in the announcement, while two others were appointed as Distinguished Professors.

“These exceptional faculty members have brought great distinction to the University,” said USC Provost Charles F. Zukoski. “Recognizing each of them is an honor for President [Carol] Folt and me.”

In 1980, Slaughter was appointed as the first Black leader of the National Science Foundation. He went on to serve as chancellor for the University of Maryland and president of Occidental College, transforming it into the most diverse liberal arts college in the United States.

“John is a ground-breaker, an inspiration to faculty, alumni and staff, and a very special role model for our future education scholars and engineers, particularly those of color,” said Pedro A. Noguera, the Emery Stoops and Joyce King Stoops Dean of USC Rossier. “In addition to John’s many contributions, all who come into his sphere know him to be a man of extraordinary kindness and generosity of time and spirit.”

Slaughter is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Hall of Fame of the American Society for Engineering Education. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the Tau Beta Pi Honorary Engineering Society. He is the founding editor of the international journal, Computers & Electrical Engineering.

“I am honored and humbled to have been chosen to join the exceptional collection of USC University Professors,” Slaughter said. “It is a privilege to know and to interact with the wonderful faculty, staff and students of both Rossier and Viterbi. I have been overwhelmed by the kind and warm expressions of congratulations that I have received. My heartfelt thanks to all!”
