Harper, who begins his term in April 2020, is the second USC Rossier professor to be elected AERA president; William G. Tierney, the Wilbur-Kieffer Professor of Higher Education at USC Rossier, held the position in 2012–13.

This July, Harper received news of another honor. He became the second person to receive Indiana University’s Bicentennial Medal, honoring those whose personal, professional, artistic and philanthropic efforts have broadened the reach of that institution around the state, nation and world.
