The Dean’s Superintendents Advisory Group (DSAG) hosted its annual awards dinner on January 30, 2025, in Monterey, California, bringing together nearly 150 members, guests, sponsors and USC Rossier staff and faculty to honor exceptional contributions to education.
This year, DSAG proudly inducted Paul Gothold EdD ’17 into the DSAG Hall of Fame. As the retired Superintendent of San Diego County of Education, Gothold has been instrumental in implementing innovative programs that have significantly improved student outcomes. His leadership is marked by a steadfast commitment to inclusivity and academic excellence.
In his acceptance speech, Gothold expressed gratitude to his mentors and colleagues, emphasizing the collective effort required to drive meaningful change in education. He stated, “This honor reflects the dedication of countless educators who work tirelessly to uplift our students. Together, we are making a difference.”
The DSAG Endowed Scholarship continues to recognize and support EdD students aspiring to the role of superintendent. This highly competitive award is bestowed through a meticulous evaluation of applications and references by the selection committee, consisting of DSAG members and USC Rossier faculty who volunteer their time. The ongoing generosity of DSAG members and sponsors makes the scholarship possible.
- Sarah Davlantis has served in the educational field for over twenty years. Starting as a high school social studies teacher, she quickly became involved in implementing the AVID program at her school, leading her department, and chairing the school’s WASC Leadership Team. Since 2022, Sarah has been the principal at El Segundo Middle School. With a passion for supporting students and teachers, she excels at creating positive relationships within her school community while ensuring equity in support.
- Ruben L. Fernández currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Business Services at Los Gatos-Saratoga UHSD. Ruben has previously led significant initiatives in the Benicia and Walnut Creek School Districts, including two major school bond initiatives, enhancing school facilities and technology infrastructure. His current role spans managing financial services, risk management, technology integration, cybersecurity governance, digital privacy and fostering culturally responsive instructional practices.
- Brian Stanley is the principal of Jefferson Elementary School in the Redondo Beach Unified School District, where he fosters an inclusive and student-centered learning environment. Guided by his core values of collaboration, community, and care, Brian is dedicated to advancing educational equity, enhancing instructional practices and empowering students to achieve their full potential. Previously, he served as an elementary teacher, assistant principal, and instructional coach in Revere, Massachusetts. Known for his reflective and solutions-oriented leadership, Brian led efforts to redesign intervention blocks, implement culturally responsive practices, and establish effective coaching systems for adult learners.
- Martha Diaz Chacon is this year’s TELACU Scholar. TELACU is a pioneering institution committed to service, empowerment, advancement, and the creation of self-sufficiency. An important part of fulfilling TELACU’s mission is equipping Latinx scholars with the tools they need to effect positive change in the communities TELACU serves. Chacon is an accomplished educator and leader with over 24 years of experience. Currently a middle school principal, she led her school to recognition as a California Distinguished School. A first-generation college graduate and daughter of immigrants, Martha is deeply committed to equity and inclusion, centering student needs and addressing achievement gaps for traditionally marginalized populations. Her career began as a chemistry and AVID teacher, inspiring students through science education and preparing them for college and future opportunities. As a leader, she has championed Civic Education and social-emotional learning, fostering inclusive school environments and promoting equitable practices.
The evening was not only a celebration of individual achievements but also a reflection on the collective progress in education. Dean Pedro A. Noguera highlighted the importance of community and collaboration in his remarks, stating “Our strength lies in our unity and shared vision for a better future for all students.”
