Yasemin Copur-Gencturk, Katzman/Ernst Chair in Educational Entrepreneurship, Technology and Innovation and associate professor of teacher education at USC Rossier School of Education, has been named associate editor of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME). Ilana Horn of Vanderbilt University, Amy Parks of Michigan State University and Tesha Sengupta-Irving of UC Berkeley will join Copur-Gencturk on the editorial team as editor-in-chief, associate editor and commentary editor, respectively.

JRME, an official journal of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), is the premier research journal in mathematics education and is devoted to the interests of teachers and researchers at all levels—preschool through college. It is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that is published five times a year.

At USC Rossier, Yasemin Copur-Gencturk has authored seminal research to produce more equitable outcomes in STEM education. She leads Science of Teaching Math, a research group that studies mathematics instruction and creates professional development programs that enhance teachers’ mastery of the knowledge and skills required to teach math effectively to all students. Copur-Gencturk’s recent research results have shown that AI is a promising tool to create effective, scalable professional development programs for teachers. Moreover, Copur-Gencturk’s tireless efforts recently earned her a grant of nearly $2 million from the National Science Foundation to further study AI-powered professional development models to improve math instruction.

“I am excited to join the editorial team of the nation’s leading journal in mathematics education. Serving in this role will allow me to further research the core issues in mathematics scholarship and education. As generative AI enters the classroom, it is critically important to develop new pedagogies and educational systems that harness the immense power of this technology and use it as a driving force to create more equitable and successful outcomes in mathematics instruction. I look forward to continuing to build upon JRME’s 50-year history of elevating innovative research and ideas that push boundaries and create lasting positive change,” said Yasemin Copur-Gencturk.

“Yasemin Copur-Gencturk’s work researching and designing new systems to bolster math education is nationally acclaimed. Her selection to serve as associate editor of JRME is further proof of the significant impact her research is having throughout her field. USC Rossier congratulates Yasemin Copur-Gencturk on this well-deserved honor and looks forward to seeing the work she will accomplish in this additional role,” said USC Rossier School of Education Dean Pedro Noguera.
