Freeman A. Hrabowski III to deliver 38th Annual Earl V. Pullias Lecture

President of University of Maryland, Baltimore County, to speak about transforming higher education

Freeman A. Hrabowski III, President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will deliver the 38th Annual Earl V. Pullias Lecture, “Transforming American Higher Education: A 50-Year Experiment and Its Lessons for the Future,” on February 4, 2016.

The event is hosted by USC Rossier’s Pullias Center for Higher Education and takes places at 4 pm in the USC Town and Gown. RSVPs are required.

Hrabowski has served as President of UMBC since 1992. His research and publications focus on science and math education, with special emphasis on minority participation and performance. He chaired the National Academies’ committee that produced the recent report, Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation: America’s Science and Technology Talent at the Crossroads. He also was named by President Obama to chair the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans.

In 2008, he was named one of “America’s Best Leaders” by U.S. News & World Report, which ranked UMBC the nation’s #1 “Up and Coming” university for six years (2009–14). Time magazine named him one of “America’s 10 Best College Presidents” in 2009, and one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” in 2012.

He serves as a consultant to the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the National Academies and universities and school systems nationally. He holds honorary degrees from more than 20 institutions, including Harvard, Princeton, Duke, University of Michigan, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, Haverford College and Harvey Mudd College.

Hrabowski has authored numerous articles and co-authored two books, Beating the Odds and Overcoming the Odds (Oxford University Press), focusing on parenting and high-achieving African-American males and females in science. His most recent book, Holding Fast to Dreams: Empowering Youth from the Civil Rights Crusade to STEM Achievement (Beacon Press, 2015), describes the events and experiences that played a central role in his development as an educator and leader. He and UMBC were recently featured on CBS’ 60 Minutes, attracting national attention for the campus’ achievements involving innovation and inclusive excellence.

Earl V. Pullias was professor emeritus of higher education at the University of Southern California. A prolific writer, he wrote (with James D. Young) the acclaimed book A Teacher is Many Things. The university created the annual Pullias Lecture in his honor, to “add to the ongoing dialogue on significant topics in higher and postsecondary education.”
