Teacher Preparation Residency

The USC Rossier Teacher Preparation Residency program is designed to recruit and support talented educators who reflect the diversity of Los Angeles. USC Rossier has partnered with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, and the Ednovate school network to offer future teachers multiple pathways into the profession.

Teacher Preparation Residency

Residents will have the opportunity to gain experience in diverse educational institutions and become mentors to aspiring youth, all while being supported and funded. The residency provides a 100% tuition scholarship and a $20,000 – $35,000 living stipend.* The first step is to apply to the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) on-campus or online program summer start.

*The residency is only available for the on-campus and online Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program summer cohorts. All residents will get a $20,000 – $35,000 stipend.

Residency Commitment

Complete residency of two terms of guided practice (directed teaching) at one assigned LAUSD school or one of six Ednovate high schools.
At the completion of the MAT program, commit to four years of teaching at LAUSD, Ednovate, or Alliance as the teacher of record.
Become a USC mentor teacher after three years of teaching (optional).

Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD)

LAUSD is the second largest K-12 school district in the United States serving a diverse student population in the city of Los Angeles. The residency program with LAUSD is a great opportunity for students looking to become an elementary, middle, or high school teacher. For guided practice, residents will be placed in a LAUSD school located in the greater Los Angeles area. After graduation, residents can seek employment within LAUSD to fulfill their commitment.

Alliance College-Ready Public Schools

Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, one of the largest nonprofit public charter school networks in the nation, operates 26 high-performing public charter middle and high schools in Los Angeles. The residency program with Alliance provides future middle and high school teachers with the chance to join an impactful organization that serves the students of local communities.

Ednovate

Ednovate is a network of schools dedicated to nurturing college bound first-generation students with high school campuses in the greater Los Angeles area. The residency program with Ednovate is a great opportunity for students looking to become a high-school teacher.

How to Apply

Applicants interested in the USC Rossier Teacher Preparation Residency Program must apply to the MAT on-campus or online summer start program by January 15, 2027.

Applicants are automatically considered for the USC Rossier Teacher Preparation Residency Program without needing a separate application.

Selected applicants will be invited to participate in an interview with the residency admission committee.

Admission to the residency program is partly based on a district’s hiring preferences. Applicants whose career plans match the preferences of a district are highly encouraged to apply. Here are the current preferences of each district:

LAUSD:

Single Subject Teachers for Math or Science
Multiple Subject Teachers with a Bilingual Authorization in Spanish

Alliance:

Teachers for all Single Subject areas for which USC Rossier offers credentials

Ednovate

Teachers for all Single Subject areas for which USC Rossier offers credentials
