Requirements To Apply

  • Completion of between 64 to 96 units at USC.
  • 3.2 GPA minimum
  • Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number  (ITIN) (used for CA teacher credentialing)

Application Process

  1. Advising Appointment with USC Rossier Undergraduate Program Lead
    1. Email us at to schedule an appointment
    2. Bring updated course plan for undergraduate courses, if possible
  2. Completed and signed USC Progressive Degree Program application 
    1. This form is to be signed by Undergraduate School Program Chair and Dean, and USC Rossier Program Chair and Dean
    2. Proposed Course Plan
      1. To be completed with help from undergraduate major advisor and USC Rossier progressive degree advisor
    3. Essay
      1. MAT applicants should respond to the following prompt(s)
        • Personal Statement: Describe your interest in the teaching profession and your purpose for becoming a teacher by obtaining a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree from the USC Rossier School of Education. In doing so, explain why you think this program is the best fit for you given what you know about the mission of USC Rossier School of Education. Finally, share what you believe are important aspects of your personal, family, professional, cultural or academic background that might aid the admissions committee in understanding your interest, qualifications, and motivation for becoming a teacher. (500 words or less)
        • Short Answer: Please tell us what attributes you possess, tangible and intangible, that will make you an asset to the school and community in which you teach.  Feel free to address your ideals and goals and subject matter if they help you to answer the question. (250 words or less)
      2. MAT-TESOL should respond to the following prompt
        • Personal Statement: The USC Rossier Master of Arts in Teaching—Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MAT–TESOL) program is committed to equipping teachers to exhibit language instruction of the highest quality and a deep commitment to student learning. We also prepare our graduates to identify and help address opportunity gaps and injustices related to languages and language learners around the world. Given these goals of the MAT-TESOL program, explain why this program aligns with your personal and professional goals and values. (500 words or less)
      3. Optional Essay: To aid the Admissions Committee in evaluating your application, use this essay to discuss anything in your academic and/or professional history that may require additional explanation, such as a low GPA or an employment gap. This essay is optional. (250 words or less)
    4. Resume
      1. Highlight any prior teaching or tutoring experience you might have
    5. Recommendation letters
      1. Two required from USC Faculty (encouraged to use USC Rossier faculty if possible); optional third letter from someone who can speak to your ability or experience as a future educator.
    6. STARS Report


Progressive Degree applications are accepted on a rolling basis. However, if you plan to start Summer 2022, you must submit your application by December 1, 2021.
