Master of Arts in Teaching—Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MAT—TESOL) at the USC Rossier School of Education

Offered by one of the world’s leading private research universities, the Master of Arts in the Teaching—Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MAT–TESOL) program will prepare you to teach English and other languages to a variety of learners in both domestic and international settings. By completing additional requirements, you may also pursue a California Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential in the areas English Language Development or World Language.

Curriculum

MAT–TESOL courses and fieldwork offer a developmental and integrated learning experience that will equip you to provide systematic and effective English language instruction. Through the curriculum, you’ll gain theoretical knowledge, practice and apply concepts in actual classrooms and have opportunities to demonstrate mastery.

Theory Practice Mastery
Develop foundational knowledge about core theories, concepts, and critical issues in the field Apply theory through practice teaching, observations and action research in classrooms Master instructional strategies in collaboration with guiding teachers, faculty and peers

The curriculum is designed to prepare you to teach rigorously and think critically and innovatively to identify and close opportunity gaps for underserved students around the world. As you advance through the program, you will acquire knowledge and skills in four broad categories:

  • Instructional approaches
  • How languages are acquired
  • How languages are structured and used
  • The importance of social context in learning and teaching

Non-Credential and Credential Tracks

The MAT–TESOL program offers both non-credential and credential tracks. The non-credential track is tailored to prepare you to teach in private schools, international schools, adult education, community colleges and other higher education settings. The non-credential track requires a minimum of 18 units when completed as part of the dual degree program.

The credential track is designed to prepare you to teach in the U.S. in a single subject language teaching assignment. Credential tracks are offered for a California Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential in English Language Development or World Language. Pursuing a credential track requires a minimum of 22 units when completed as part of the dual degree program.

Master of Arts in International Language Education (MAILE) at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

The Master of Arts in International Language Education will prepare you to teach English or Chinese as a second language. The program offers an advanced English-taught postgraduate education in two specialized concentrations: Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL) and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). Taught by experts with an integrated combination of extensive teaching and research experience in bilingual contexts, the program will prepare language professionals for a dynamic global career with a solid foundation in applied linguistics and research-informed language teaching approaches.

Curriculum

The MAILE program requires a minimum of six courses (18 units) when completed as part of the dual degree program. Of the six courses, you are required to take two foundation courses (6 units), and four concentration elective or general elective courses (12 units). You must declare your concentration at the time of application. Double-specialization is not allowed.
