The USC Rossier School of Education’s Physician Leadership Program (PLP) convened 27 physician-leaders for a Continuing Medical Education leadership development session on December 5. The event, a partnership with Cedars-Sinai Health Sciences University, is funded partly through the generous support of the Remy Louis Chatain Jr. Foundation.
The session featured interactive workshops and discussions designed to strengthen leadership competencies essential for today’s healthcare environment. Participants engaged in a dynamic curriculum that focused on effective leadership behaviors and emotional intelligence. Professors Jennifer Phillips, co-director of the program, and Alison Muraszewski, both from USC Rossier, and Professor Glenn Fox from the USC Marshall School of Business facilitated the session workshops.
“I have learned so much from this program, and the fact that it is taught by doctoral-level instructors who ground the material in problems of practice makes it especially meaningful to us. In addition, discussing these problems with other students helps clarify issues so we can more clearly address them,” said Associate Professor Sebina Bulic, MD, USC Keck School of Medicine.
Throughout the afternoon, attendees participated in case studies, self-assessments and reflective exercises designed to foster conscious leadership in complex healthcare settings.
“The content of this program is incredibly rich and relatable. I appreciate the fact that I can take these concepts and immediately apply them to my work environment. The personal growth aspect taught through the lens of emotional intelligence and motivation theories is great as are the frameworks to solve problems. I am really looking forward to the next session,” said Associate Professor Ed Ray, Cedars-Sinai Health Sciences University.
James Hu, MD, professor of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Health Sciences University and co-director of the Physician Leadership Program, said the “session reflects our commitment to empowering physician leaders with the tools to navigate complexity and inspire change. Looking ahead, we’re excited to expand the Physician Leadership Program next year with additional partnerships that deepen the integration of leadership theory, emotional intelligence and business strategy across healthcare systems.”
The Physician Leadership Program continues to advance its mission of equipping physicians with the skills to lead with vision, empathy and resilience. This in-person session underscores the program’s commitment to experiential learning and collaborative growth. Funding from the Remy Louis Chatain Jr. Foundation also supports annual Grand Rounds events, which have brought notable figures, such as Francis Fukuyama and Doris Kearns Goodwin, to the USC campus.
