The Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) has announced that Provost Professor Shaun R. Harper will receive this year’s Leadership Award, for bringing visibility and support to the field of higher education.

ASHE is the nation’s largest professional group for higher education researchers; Harper served as ASHE president from 2017-18.

“Although Dr. Harper’s talents as a nationally recognized leader are tremendous,” writes the ASHE nominating committee, “he has consistently contributed to and engaged with the ASHE community in various leadership roles.”

Harper, the Clifford and Betty Allen Chair in Urban Leadership at USC Rossier, founded the USC Race and Equity Center in 2017. Under Harper’s tenure, the USC Race and Equity Center has been a national leader in helping administrators around the country better understand their school climate, via the National Assessment of Collegiate Campus Climate (NACCC). The center also recently launched PRISM, an online tool designed to help higher education professionals of color network and find career opportunities.

Harper will receive the ASHE Leadership Award at the association’s annual conference this November in Portland, Ore.

Harper is the second USC Rossier faculty member in a row to earn the ASHE Leadership Award; in 2018, it went to Dean’s Professor in Educational Equity Estela Mara Bensimon.
