Tierney Elected to National Academy of Education

University Professor William G. Tierney was elected as a member of the National Academy of Education (NAEd), a disciplinary society of 150 U.S. members and international associates recognized for their outstanding scholarship and contributions to education.

He will be inducted into the society at the annual meeting in Washington, D.C. in November 2014.

Tierney, who serves as the Wilbur-Kieffer Professor of Higher Education at USC Rossier, is the second USC professor to join the Academy. He joins Robert Rueda, Stephen H. Crocker Professor in Education at USC Rossier, who was welcomed as a member in April 2013.

An internationally renowned professor of higher education policy analysis, governance and administration, Tierney became the first USC scholar to be elected to serve as president of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) for the 2012-13 term. He is also past president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). He was recently awarded a visiting fellowship at the University of Hong Kong to contribute to that university’s higher education studies. He has previously served as a Fulbright Scholar in Central America and Australia and received the Award for Leadership from ASHE in 2013.

Tierney has spent more than two decades conducting research on college access for underrepresented youth, as well as improving the performance of colleges and universities, and is committed to informing policies and practices related to educational equity and postsecondary effectiveness. He has authored numerous journal articles, book chapters and books.

As co-director of the USC Pullias Center for Higher Education, he has led a number of studies pertaining to remediation and college-readiness, access to college, governance in higher education, and the role of universities in under-developed countries. The Pullias Center is currently involved in the development of Collegeology Games, a series of interactive digital games designed to guide students through the college preparation, application, and financial aid processes.

Founded in 1965, the mission of NAEd is to advance high quality education research and its use in policy formulation and practice. The Academy undertakes research studies that address pressing issues in education, and sponsors professional development fellowship programs that contribute to the preparation of the next generation of scholars.
