EdD Online Interview and Writing Assessment

The EDL online interview and timed writing assessment are online exercises that measure a candidate’s ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills in spoken and written form. These assessments are required for all applicants to the EdD in Educational Leadership (EDL) program.

Prior to completing your online interview, be sure to:

  • Dress professionally
  • Have water, a pen and a notepad on hand
  • Refrain from eating or chewing during your recording
  • Be sure to test your computers camera and sound beforehand

No advance preparation is required in order to complete the timed writing assessment. In the assessment, you will have 30 minutes in which to compose a concise, well-reasoned response to the prompt you receive.

A typical response will be approximately 400-500 words, although there is no set requirement. Length will vary according to your individual writing style. As a general guideline, the essay should be structured with an introduction containing a thesis statement, a body containing your major points and a conclusion. You do not need to be familiar with the issue in the position statement. You are asked not to use citations or to conduct research on the topic while writing your response.

The admissions committee will evaluate your responses on the basis of its logic and clarity. After completion, the online interview and writing assessment becomes part of your application and is reviewed by the admissions committee along with your other submitted materials.
