Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana PhD ’95

Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana PhD ’95 who was appointed by L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti to serve as Education and Workforce Advisor for Los Angeles, recently assumed the position of president of the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS). ALAS is committed to identifying, recruiting, developing and advancing Latino school administrators in order to improve the educational accomplishments of Latino youth.

Before assuming her current position in Los Angeles, Meléndez de Santa Ana served as superintendent of Santa Ana Unified School District. The school board praised her performance, citing the development of a broad strategic plan which included the rapid transition to new learning standards adopted by the state. From 2009 to 2011, Meléndez de Santa Ana served as assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education for the Obama Administration under U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. During her tenure, she developed the Blueprint for Reform and implemented the School Improvement Grants program.
